29 - Scrambled Eggs With Bacon and Spinach [Huevos Revueltos con Tocino y Espinacas]

Another egg - based breakfast to make me feel like the carbon- based life-form I'm supposed to be. It was 5am in the frozen north and lack of sleep aside how better to start it than with something tasty. I'm away off to work followed by a London day adventure on possible the most nerve-wracking but exciting trip of my life and am hoping that tapas can get me there...

Verdict:
Best eggs so far. Could be to do with the time of day or the fact I used a rather chargrilled bagel. Either way I'm a massive fan. The pictures however don't do it justice but my retro camera phone is about as sleepy and useful as me in the morning...

28 - Broiled Tortilla [Tortilla al Horno]

Breakfast Tortilla... why not?

The Verdict:
I really really need to add more oil to the pan when cooking these. Once agin my ability to make anything resembling a pancake ended up as a scrambled mess. Still this one was really tasty and a rather damn good Sunday brunch option which took almost as long as me fellow cook to make a bagel with beans on top, while not a bad option either I cant help but think I won that one....

27 - Potatoes with Chorizo [Patatas con Chorizo]

I'm constantly entertaining people at the moment which is really nice. On reflection it might be something to do with the fact I'm making Tapas left, right and centre but its hard to tell. This was another recipe I let the willing test subjects/ victims choose and is yet another dish which just sounds like It could be great...

The Verdict:
This was really yummy. I could potentially have fried the potatoes more or added more spice as I feel the potatoes/sauce around it ration was in the potatoes favor. Still it went down well and [as far as I know] nobody died.

26 - Fried Cheese with Bacon [Fritos de Queso Y Bacon]

I had some potential good or at worst exciting news to celebrate so had some friends over for a session of awful films, epic tea drinking and tapas making. As well as recreating the wonder which was Chorizo cooked in wine I let them choose what else they fancied making. This one came out tops.

The Verdict:
Pretty awesome. Why this hasn't become a staple of buffet dinners and party food is beyond me. We may have also 'cheated' by making the recipe more epic by using cheese with chilli in some and the amazing addition of chorizo in others. They didn't look very pretty and were slightly burnt but this worked very well.

25 - Fava Bean Ragu [Ragu De Habas]

I have a lot of spare fava beans to use up and along with already having the other ingredients required to make this, this sounded like the tastiest option by far. I'm having a very Ragu based day but if it helps get the work done and is hot and yummy then I don't really mind...

The Verdict:
I did add some chili to the mix and probably didn't leave it simmering for long enough as it came out kind of powdery thanks to the carrot but this was really good. Next time I have to make a spaghetti Bolognese or something similar, I'm going to use this as the basis for the sauce. The beans gave it a really creamy texture while the addition of bacon, which I had never thought of adding to Ragu before was this dish's shining glory. It would work equally well with pancetta I think but the flavour in every bite was unreal.

I know I don't need a giant miffy lamp and my life is no less insane for owning one, but it is a really nice object...

24 - Rice With Ham and Chorizo [Arroz Con Tocino Y Chorizo]

More ingredients. Part leftovers, part comfort food, mainly necessity. With a backlog of tiredness still having me in its grip something easy and filling was requird. Looking forward to a) sleep b) the weekend...

The Verdict:
Although compiled of bits, with every ingredient being really tasty there is nothing not to love about this dish. I also added in some leftover chicken which made it slightly more epic.

23 - Black Pudding and Fried Fava Beans [Morcilla Y Habas Fritas]

So awake for 38 hours, in the office for 31 of those but completing work meant seriously reduced brainpower/ energy for shopping. After working out what I had in the kitchen cupboard/ fridge it was decided on habas fritas and black pudding. Black meal for a black day. Not particularly healthy or inspiring. But quick.

Verdict:

Sure. Strangely it works. There is a good range of texture and while not one I'd be rushing to make again, was far from unpleasant. If the beans had been fried or baked so that they were crispier it would have been better...

22 - Scrambled Eggs With Spinach and Prawns [Revuelto de Espinacas Gambas Y Huevos]

What's better than scrambled eggs on toast for breakfast? Scrambled eggs with prawns on toast [with spinach]. I woke up feeling strangely ill and unusually shattered considering I'd actually had more sleep than usual and with a lot of prawns left over thought this would be a good breakfast. I had intended to add chives but forgot but did include the remainder of the Serrano Ham which as it turned out was a stroke of genius.

The Verdict:
Nice, expected solid effort. Could probably have added more spinach and luckily I was only photographing one dish as the other looked pretty disgusting. My plating abilities leave a lot to be desired for! Still as scrambled eggs go this was excellent, the ham was a lovely salty addition and once a light dusting of cayanne pepper has been added it was an incredible, albeit improvised morning meal.

21 - Crayfish In Wine And Tomato Sauce [Cangrejos de Rio al Estilo Burdeos]

This dish is Dangerous. Capital D. Flaming brandy included. Anything involving alcohol, fire and seafood gets my vote. I shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a recipe that states all of this but the book dictated and ultimately..its not my kitchen. The lack of crayfish meant that we substituted a ridiculous amount of prawns instead and while we could of opened up some very expensive brandy we used the already open Apricot Brandy instead, it was a risk and one that we were happy to take. Although I was highly skeptical about the rustic looking tomatoes and the addition of a carrot I had a feeling that this dish would be something pretty spectacular...

The Verdict:
Providing that it was not just the wine fumes going to our head this dish is awesome. Sure the sauce could of been blended further but the slight chunkyness was welcome, tasty and unbelievably yummy. It was surprisignly incredible, deceptively light and moreish. This was part of a feast I was making so figured that were it to go wrong, it wouldnt really matter all dishes considered, turned out to be my favourite dish of the lot. Well done recipe, well done. The only downside with this recipe is that having already made it I may need to wait a further 230 days before I can make it again...

20 - Basque-Style Tuna Belly Fillets [Ventresca de Atun a la Vasca]

Mmm.. Tuna, the meaty fish. Ok.. so its not Tuna Sashimi but honestly any Tuna is good in my books. Apparently overly so as I was wandering round picking ingredients for our Tapas meal determined we needed a can of it for a recipe we had already decided not to make. I put it down to stress this past week but sense was nowhere near my brain on this shopping trip. I have also never seen a deli assistant so confused as when we asked her for three good slices of ham. That is what the recipe said and we ended up with six fairly decent slices, morality unknown and a shop assistant that really didn't know how to deal with us. It was fun because I was cooking for someone other than myself. This is nice, not only because its a nice saturday thing to do but because the whole ethos of tapas is to eat together. Even if they do have a better phone camera than me. I do maintain that no matter of the quality of these photos [all pretty awful but thats not really the point] that no Instagram will be used in the making of this blog. Its also nice because I have found in the fish section that one gets away from the standard yellow and red colours and verge towards the greener hue of food. Its rather odd but most of the food I have made matches the Spanish flag. Variation is nice...

The Verdict:
As much as the Tuna was the hero of this dish and all the flavours worked well the addition of green peppers let it down. Its not that I dislike green peppers but there is a muskiness to them which I always find strangely overbearing. Had it been any other type of peppers I cant help but think it would have been pretty damn epic. There was a definite surprise saltiness which came from the Serrano Ham which worked really well and added to the meaty-ness of the Tuna. I'd never cooked Tuna fillet before and it was insanely quick and really fun. Overall really tasty and deceptively quick.

19 - Cod in Beer [Bacalo Con Cerveza]

Finally some fish! About 1/4 of the book's recipes contain some kind of fish/ seafood and while I'm not going to start with baby eels in vodka, the helpful fish counter [and totally confused staff] in Sainsbury's is finally allowing me to work through some of them. I also thought that over weekends I'd have more time to write this but I've simply just been really busy recently and having some days off makes me want to take them off entirely. Its also time to use another kitchen, which is fun and makes me wonder how many will be used in the completion of this insane challenge.

The Verdict:
The recipe called for baby cod and we just used a fillet so I have no idea if there is any taste difference. It was a lovely piece of fish good and the breadcrumbs give it an almost battered feeling but its definitely lacking some punch. Perhaps using a different beer with more of a malty flavour or the addition of some more herbs may jazz it up. Or perhaps all its needs is some chips and vinegar. Who knows but it definitely needs something. Cooking it in a balti dish though was a good idea...

Taste :     3/5    Well cooked and Nice but Bland-ish
Time  :     3/5    25 minutes
Visual :     3/5      Good Dish
Magic :     3/5      Perhaps With A Different Beer

* The first time I reviewed this I may have been a bit harsh on the poor cod and it came out as a 10. So I've retrospectively reviewed that and given it a much fairer score. It was perfectly cooked and such a lovely pice of fish that it deserved more than 10.
